Sunshine And Showers

Yesterday evening we visited Prospect hospice in Wroughton. The reason for this will become apparent in due course. Jackie and I followed Elizabeth and Mum back along the M4 and M3 to The Firs in driving rain. Having settled our mother into her own home Elizabeth provided a much-needed meal of sausages, chips, eggs and baked beans, with which red wine and Becks were imbibed.

Pools on footpathLandscapeIt did not take me long to realise that my chosen route this morning was not a good idea. Pools filled the track between Roger’s fields, and, despite distant patches of blue sky, rain fell steadily. I retraced my steps and took the circular road route to Crepuscular raysHordle Cliff, by which time the skies were clearing and crepuscular rays could be seen enlivening the Solent. These actually near parallel shafts of sunlight appear to be converging at the point where the sun emerges from the clouds.

A pair of mallards paddled under the footbridge over the Shorefield stream, and a herd of MallardsFootbridgeCattle on hillsidecattle that had been sheltering under the trees behind them on my way down now basked on the hillside in the warm sunshine.

Between showers this afternoon, Jackie continued her autumn tidying of the garden and I finished pruning the hedging on the North side of the back drive boundary. We just have to rake the surface, dig out a few more bramble and ivy roots, and remove inches of earth from some of the gravel. That should keep us busy for a while.

Following yesterday’s abortive call to BT, I rang them again. This time there were fewer of the robot’s questions and I very soon spoke to an intelligent person. He may have been intelligent, but the system beggars belief. The reason we have both on-line and paper billing, the first in my name and the second in Jackie’s, was explained to me. The electronic system enters my name because I was setting it up. However, the money is taken from Jackie’s account because hers are the only bank details they have. If we were to continue to receive both methods of billing we would have to pay the surcharge from December. We could cancel either system of invoicing.

I cancelled the paper bills and will continue to receive e-mails informing me that the money will be taken from my account when in fact it will be taken from Jackie’s. Simples, as a meerkat would say.

This evening we dined on fish and chips at Daniel’s in Highcliffe. I drank tea and Jackie drank coffee.
